You put a lot of work into finding the perfect rug for your home. You spent a lot of time doing your research and you went all over town before finding one that is just the right color scheme to match the rest of your decor, has a lovely pattern, and feels great on your feet. So when your rug starts looking like it’s giving up, it’s sad to see it worn down after simply doing its job. In the name of protecting your investment, here are 5 helpful tips on keeping your rugs looking great for years to come.
Keep Your Rugs Looking Like New
Maintaining your rugs is going to take a little work but don’t worry, we know you can handle it. All you have to do is:
- Pick the right material! Keeping your rugs looking like they like they did the day you brought them home starts when you’re still in the buying process. If you’re looking for a rug that you know will be kept in a high traffic area, invest in one made of a material that can handle the workload. For example, wool rugs can generally stand the test of time.
- Keep it a “shoe-free zone!” If the rug is more for decorative purposes, keeping it shoe-free will eliminate any excess and downright unnecessary dirt from working its way into the carpet fibers.
- Use a fabric protector! You rugs don’t necessarily come ready for the workload they’ll be experiencing. To get them on par with your needs, use a fabric protector spray like our Supershield® fabric protector (which is Woolsafe® approved)! Fabric protectors help fight against daily dirt and more serious stains if used as directed.
- Vacuum, vacuum vacuum! Regular vacuuming keeps as much dirt as possible out of your carpet. Neglecting to vacuum for long periods of time will allow dirt to continue piling up between the fibers of your rug; over time, the dirt will gradually grind away at the fibers of your rug slowly destroying it.
- Hire a professional! Of course all the work you put into maintaining your rugs will make a difference, but over time dirt will work it’s way in and will wear down your rug’s fibers. If your rug is in a high traffic area, it should be cleaned professionally about once per year. (Rugs in lower traffic areas can stand to wait to be cleaned every 2-4 years unless there is a risk of moths).
