With pollen counts this spring ranging from “high” to “shockingly high”, those of us who fight allergies are settling in for a spring full of misery. It can seem like sniffling, sneezing, itchy eyes, and fatigue are just a normal part of spring. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to lessen your allergy symptoms — at least when you’re inside your home. We have a few tips to help you fight spring allergies naturally!
Try Herbal Supplements and Teas
While many natural allergy treatments, such as buying local honey, don’t have the support of scientific research, there is one herbal supplement which has been shown in studies to mitigate allergy symptoms — butterbur. In some hay fever cases, butterbur supplements have been as effective as over-the-counter medicinal treatments. Stinging Nettle has also shown promise as an herbal alternative to traditional medicine. Both of these can be bought as a supplement or in the form of bagged or looseleaf tea. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any supplements to ensure they will work safely for you.
Pick up a Neti Pot (or Saline Spray)
If you’ve never heard of neti pots, they may sound like an oddball teapot. Their actual use is a little more complicated. Essentially, neti pots are used to run filtered water or saline solution up through the nasal cavity and back down the other side, clearing out any irritants trapped inside. Neti pots are available at most natural foods stores. If you’re not a fan of the neti pot concept, saline sprays are similar and have been shown to have similar benefits.
Switch Out Your Cleaning Products
The truth is, the harsh chemicals in many home cleaning products tend to make symptoms worse instead of helping make you feel better. We suggest changing up your cleaning routine with natural products, either picked up from the store or put together yourself at home. You can find some great recipes for natural cleaning products here, or come up with your own combinations at home. You may be surprised at how much better you feel once those chemicals are out of your home.
Call in a Professional to Look at your Air Ducts
We don’t often think about the air ducts inside our homes, but if you’re suffering from allergy symptoms inside as well as outside, your air ducts may be to blame. Over time, dust, debris, and pollen and pet dander from outdoors will find their way in and slowly build up within your ventilation system. Don’t settle for air quality that gets steadily worse year after year. Having your air ducts cleaned by the professionals at Ron’s could leave you breathing easily all the way through spring.
At Ron’s, we don’t just clean air ducts — we work with hardwood floors, carpets, Oriental and area rugs, tile & grout cleaning, and so much more. Check out our current specials, too! You can reach us by phone at (864) 297-6440 or contact us online at any time!
