Traditional New Year’s resolutions revolve around getting in shape, eating healthier foods, or even picking up a hobby you’ve been trying to find the time for. What if you used your resolutions for 2017 to help you make the most of your time at home instead?
We have five great resolutions to make that will help you to make your home truly the sanctuary you need in 2017.
1. Embrace Inexpensive Decor Changes
Have you been wanting to redo your living room, but the idea of buying a whole new furniture set or painting the walls just seems overwhelming or far too expensive? You can change the whole look and feel of a room without having to take on pricey purchases just by changing up your throw pillows, wall decor, and coffee table.
Think about what your ideal living room looks like. Write down some details that you’d like to see, like rustic wood elements or some bright splashes of color, then make a list of specific items you’d like to keep an eye out for. Then you’ll be better prepared to go bargain-hunting at your favorite stores to find the kind of decor that calls to you — without spending an arm and a leg.
2. Drop That Drive-Through Coffee Habit
We applaud those of you trying to give up caffeine entirely this year — we’re not quite ready for that. Nonetheless, you can really improve your mornings (and save a few dollars a day) by skipping that trip through the drive-through at the coffeeshop.
If you feel like the coffee in your at-home pot just isn’t as good at what you get at your favorite coffeeshop, try switching to a French press. The taste of your coffee will be deeper and more layered this way, and you may find you don’t miss that coffeeshop brew at all. If it’s more about the time you’d have to spend brewing in a traditional drip-pot each day, try getting everything ready to go the night before. Then, schedule your coffeepot to start brewing automatically at the time you’re scheduled to get out of bed. You’ll have fresh, delicious coffee waiting for you the moment you step into the kitchen.
(If you take this on, keep an eye on your bank account — we bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much money you save over the year!)
3. Improve Your Indoor Air Quality
Spring is coming, and once it’s here we’ll be right back in the depths of allergy season. Make a resolution to take care of indoor air quality issues before the pollen storm hits!
Be sure to replace your indoor air filters once a month. If you have trouble remembering (air filters tend to be in out-of-the-way places that can be easy to overlook), set yourself a monthly reminder on your phone. If you have pets, play outdoor sports, or keep a garden, you may need to change your filter frequently to keep your indoor air quality maintained.
You may also consider having your air ducts cleaned. Dirt, dust, and debris build up over time within air ducts, eventually causing issues with indoor air quality that even monthly air filter changes can’t quite fix. A professional air duct cleaning will help improve the air in your home right away.
4. De-Clutter Your Wardrobe With the Six-Month Rule
This year, work on getting your unruly closet under control by employing the Six Month Rule. Head into your closet and turn all of your hangers backwards. As you wear each item of clothing, turn its associated hanger around.
Set a reminder on your phone to look at your closet in six months’ time. Any clothing whose hanger is still turned backwards? That’s clothing you haven’t worn in six months… and odds are good it’s clothing that you’re not going to wear anytime soon. Donate these items of clothing to a local thrift store or non-profit and you’ll have a cleaner closet alongside better peace of mind.
